Spider-Man Can Save the World in Two Hours. The Honey Bee Has Been Doing It All Along.

The theater goes dark.
A red mask fills the screen. A young man swings between buildings, suspended from a thread that should never be strong enough to hold him. Somewhere below, people scatter, cars stop, glass breaks and a familiar promise takes shape: when ordinary human beings cannot handle the danger, someone extraordinary will appear.
In the summer of 2026, audiences have been willing to pay extraordinary amounts of money to see that promise again.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, has become a global box-office phenomenon. After an enormous opening, the movie continued pulling audiences into theaters around the world, eventually crossing the $2 billion mark globally.
It is another demonstration of the peculiar durability of Spider-Man.
For generations, audiences have been fascinated by the idea that some of nature's smallest creatures possess abilities humans can barely imagine. A spider becomes the inspiration for a superhero who climbs walls, senses danger and moves through a city on strands of silk.
But outside the theater, another tiny creature performs feats that are arguably more consequential to everyday human life.
There is no theme music when she leaves the hive.
No costume.
No movie franchise.
A worker honey bee simply flies.
She may travel across a neighborhood, farm, roadside or garden, moving from flower to flower in search of nectar and pollen. Yellow grains collect against the hairs of her body. Some of that pollen will be carried to another blossom.
A flower may become a fruit.
A fruit may become someone's breakfast.
Multiply that journey by thousands of workers in a colony, then by millions of colonies and countless wild pollinators, and something resembling a hidden agricultural infrastructure emerges.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says about 35 percent of the world's food crops depend on animal pollinators to reproduce. USDA also estimates that honey bees pollinate roughly $15 billion worth of American crops each year. Apples, almonds, squash, melons and many other foods are tied to the work of pollinating insects.

That does not mean humanity would starve tomorrow without honey bees. Wheat, corn, rice and several other major staples do not depend on honey bees in the same way that many fruits, nuts and vegetables do.
The more accurate consequence is subtler—and in some ways more revealing.
Our diets would become less diverse. Some foods could become harder or more expensive to produce. Farmers growing pollinator-dependent crops would face greater pressure. Ecosystems would lose important reproductive relationships.
The supermarket would still exist.
It would simply become a different supermarket.
That is what makes the contrast with Spider-Man interesting.
We readily understand the importance of a hero when danger arrives dramatically. A collapsing bridge is obvious. A villain is obvious. A city under attack is obvious.
Ecological infrastructure rarely announces itself that way.
A honey bee does not save the world in a single spectacular act. She participates in millions of tiny transactions that help keep the world functioning.
And honey bees themselves are part of a much larger cast.
North America contains thousands of native bee species, alongside butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, birds and bats that can serve as pollinators. USDA notes that more than 3,500 native bee species contribute to crop yields.
That distinction matters because "save the bees" can become misleading when it treats every bee as though it were the same animal facing the same problem.
Managed European honey bees, Apis mellifera, are agricultural livestock as well as pollinators. Beekeepers can divide colonies, raise queens, move hives, treat parasites and replace losses.
Wild pollinators do not necessarily have a beekeeper coming to help them.
Honey bees nevertheless face a formidable collection of pressures.
The Environmental Protection Agency describes pollinator health as the product of interacting stressors rather than a single villain: parasites and disease, pesticide exposure, habitat conditions and other environmental pressures can overlap. Climate change adds another complication because flowering schedules, drought and heat can change when and where nectar and pollen are available.
Among the most persistent threats to managed honey bees is Varroa destructor, a parasitic mite that feeds on bees and helps spread damaging viruses through colonies.
There is an uncomfortable lesson here for anyone raised on superhero stories.
Real-world threats rarely have one villain.
There is no Green Goblin of pollinator decline who can simply be defeated in the final scene.
The problem is a system.
And strangely enough, bees themselves are masters of systems.
When a honey bee colony becomes crowded and reproduces by swarming, thousands of bees may leave their old home with a queen and temporarily cluster on a branch, fence, building or other surface.
To a homeowner seeing it for the first time, the sight can be alarming: thousands of insects gathered into a moving, breathing mass.
Inside that swarm, however, something remarkable is happening.
The bees are house hunting.
Scout bees fly into the surrounding landscape searching for cavities suitable for a new colony. When a scout discovers a promising location, she returns and communicates information about it through the waggle dance.
Other scouts investigate competing locations.
There is no chief executive bee ordering everyone into the best tree.
There is no architect bee with a blueprint.
There is no queen issuing directions.
Research by Thomas Seeley and other scientists has shown that the swarm reaches its decision collectively. Better nest sites generally receive stronger recruitment. Competing possibilities are gradually eliminated. Scientists have even documented "stop signals" that scouts use to inhibit competing dances, helping a swarm break deadlocks between alternatives.
Eventually enough scouts converge on a choice.
Then thousands of individuals do something extraordinary.
They move as one.
The comparison to human intelligence has fascinated researchers for decades because the colony demonstrates how sophisticated decisions can emerge without a single individual possessing all the information.
That may be the honey bee's most overlooked superpower.
Not flight.
Not honey.
Not pollination.
Coordination.
A colony is an organism constructed from individuals.
Its workers regulate temperature, defend entrances, feed developing larvae, care for the queen, collect food, remove waste, construct comb and communicate information.
The honey itself is part of that survival system. Nectar gathered during abundant months is transformed, dehydrated and stored so the colony can survive periods when flowers disappear.
The jar sitting on a kitchen shelf is therefore more than a sweetener.
It is stored sunlight, flower chemistry and biological labor.
That reality becomes especially visible when honey bees choose human structures for homes.
A homeowner may hear buzzing behind siding or notice insects disappearing through a small opening in brickwork. Inside the cavity can be an entire functioning colony: workers, brood, wax, pollen, honey and a queen.
The immediate human instinct is understandable.
Get them out.
But that moment also creates a choice between extermination and, where conditions permit, live removal and relocation.
In Maryland, Charm City Honey Bees has built part of its business around that intersection between people and pollinators.
The veteran- and minority-owned company says it grew from an Eagle Scout project into an operation involving honey production, pollination, education and live honey-bee removal across Maryland, Washington and surrounding communities. Its stated philosophy is that honey bees entering buildings should not automatically be treated as disposable pests.
That work can look decidedly less glamorous than superhero fiction.
A beekeeper may be standing on a ladder in August heat.
A wall may need to be opened.
Comb can be packed into a cavity that was never designed to contain a colony.
The queen must be found or accounted for. Bees must be collected. Honey and wax may have to be removed. Entry points must be considered because removing insects without addressing the conditions that attracted them can leave the structure vulnerable to another colony.
And somewhere in the middle of all of this is an important change in perspective.
The question stops being simply, "How do we get rid of these bees?"
It becomes, "How do we solve the human problem without unnecessarily destroying the biological system?"
Charm City Honey Bees has increasingly treated education as part of that answer. Its published materials describe youth programs, pollinator gardens and community outreach alongside honey production and bee removal. The company's pollinator-garden program, for example, presents gardens not merely as landscaping but as small pieces of ecological infrastructure that can provide forage while becoming outdoor classrooms.
That may sound modest beside a $2 billion superhero movie.
It should.
Real ecological resilience is usually built from modest things.
A homeowner deciding not to spray a swarm.
A school maintaining a pollinator garden.
A farmer protecting flowering habitat.
A city planting vegetation that feeds insects instead of merely decorating roadsides.
A beekeeper relocating a viable colony.
A child opening a hive for the first time and discovering that the frightening cloud of insects in front of them is actually an organized society.
The stakes eventually reach far beyond bees.
Pollination contributes to agricultural productivity. Agricultural productivity influences supply. Supply influences prices. Food diversity affects nutrition. Habitat supports wildlife beyond pollinators themselves.
That is why a creature weighing only a fraction of a gram can occupy a surprisingly large place in economics.
USDA's agricultural statistics program tracks honey production, colony numbers, colony losses, pollination costs and other measures because bees are not simply an environmental curiosity. They are part of the machinery of American agriculture. Its March 2026 honey report also counted about 27,000 paid and unpaid apiary workers in the United States during 2025, a reminder that beekeeping itself supports a network of human livelihoods.
The irony is difficult to miss.
Humans have spent decades imagining what would happen if the abilities of a tiny arthropod were transferred into the body of a man.
We built comics around the idea.
Then television programs.
Toys.
Video games.
Movies.
Eventually, a global entertainment franchise worth billions.
Perhaps the more interesting question is what happens when we direct some of that curiosity back toward the creatures themselves.
A spider's silk is extraordinary without Spider-Man.
A bee's navigation is extraordinary without animation.
A swarm choosing a home is extraordinary without dialogue.
A colony maintaining its temperature, distributing food and coordinating tens of thousands of individuals is extraordinary without a screenplay.
And pollination is extraordinary precisely because it doesn't look extraordinary.
The next time someone walks through a produce aisle, there will probably be no visible evidence of the insects that helped make portions of it possible.
There will simply be blueberries.
Apples.
Melons.
Squash.
Almonds.
Pumpkins.
Foods disconnected by modern commerce from the fields, flowers and wings that helped produce them.
That distance between people and the biological systems supporting them may be one of the central environmental challenges of modern life.
Charm City Honey Bees' work offers one local response: bring people close enough to bees to understand them.
Not every person needs to become a beekeeper.
Not every backyard needs a hive.
In fact, supporting pollinators can sometimes mean something simpler: planting appropriate flowering species, reducing unnecessary pesticide exposure, preserving nesting habitat and learning the difference between a temporary honey-bee swarm and an aggressive pest situation. EPA recommends a range of pollinator-protection practices for homeowners, growers, educators and governments.
The goal should not be to romanticize bees.
Honey bees sting. Colonies inside buildings can create legitimate structural and safety concerns. Beekeeping requires knowledge, equipment and management. Managed honey bees also should not be confused with conservation of America's diverse native bees.
Respect begins with seeing the whole picture.
That may ultimately be where the superhero comparison becomes most useful.
Spider-Man's enduring lesson was never really that spider powers are impressive.
It was that possessing power creates responsibility.
Our relationship with pollinators presents the principle in reverse.
Human beings already possess the power.
We decide what gets planted.
We decide what gets sprayed.
We decide how cities develop.
We decide whether habitat disappears.
We decide whether an unexpected colony is automatically destroyed or first evaluated for another possibility.
The bee cannot make those decisions for us.
She can only leave the hive tomorrow morning, navigate toward the light and begin visiting flowers.
One blossom.
Then another.
Then another.
No applause. No cape. No billion-dollar opening weekend.
Just an ancient creature doing the quiet work that helped build the world long before anyone imagined superheroes.
And perhaps that is exactly why she deserves our attention.
