Honor and Legacy: Harriet Tubman’s New Rank as a General
- By Sentel
Charmers, Cousins, and The Hive Family: In a momentous Veterans Day ceremony, history was made once again for Harriet Tubman—a revered abolitionist and Civil War hero—as she was posthumously awarded the rank of Brigadier General by Maryland's National Guard. The ceremony took place in Church Creek, Maryland, at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park, where officials and attendees gathered to honor Tubman's enduring legacy and her remarkable contributions to the American story.
From Freedom Seeker to Freedom Leader
Born into slavery, Tubman escaped in 1849 and settled in Philadelphia. But instead of retreating into a safer life, she chose to risk it all, returning repeatedly to the South to lead others to freedom through the Underground Railroad. With bravery and determination, Tubman became not only a symbol of liberty but also an active scout, spy, and nurse for the Union Army during the Civil War, guiding soldiers on daring missions and proving her leadership on the battlefield. Her courage and compassion are the essence of what Veterans Day celebrates.
A Veterans Day Like No Other
Maryland Governor Wes Moore praised Tubman as “one of the greatest authors of the American story.” In an emotional address, he emphasized that Tubman’s new title of general reflects her impact and dedication. "She knew that leadership means you have to be willing to do what you are asking others to do," he noted, recognizing her fearless journey into hostile territory for the sake of freedom.
As Tubman's great-great-great-grandniece Tina Wyatt shared in her speech, "Aunt Harriet gave up her own rights to fight for others. She is a selfless person." With this new honor, Tubman's status as a true American icon is more visible than ever, inspiring generations who visit the park or encounter her story.
Tubman’s Legacy Today
Beyond her symbolic rank, Tubman’s legacy continues to flourish. Philadelphia plans to unveil a 14-foot bronze statue, and a Chicago elementary school has been renamed in her honor. Although efforts to feature her on the $20 bill remain stalled, Tubman’s indomitable spirit and dedication to justice remain unshaken.
